Itinerary – Manu Cultural Zone 4 Day Tour
Day 1 : Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata
We will begin our expedition very early with hotel pickup in Cusco (5:00 a.m. – 5:30 a.m.). We will set off on a journey ascending through the Andes mountain range, passing through picturesque rural towns until reaching our first stop in Paucartambo, a colonial town rich in history.
We will continue ascending to Acjanaco, the gateway to the Manu Reserve at 3,500 m.a.s.l. From this point, we will begin a fascinating descent into the cloud forest, a lush ecosystem home to orchids, heliconias, and giant ferns. Along the way, we will have the great opportunity to observe the famous Cock-of-the-Rock (the national bird of Peru) in its natural habitat, as well as umbrellabirds, trogons, and quetzals. By late afternoon, we will arrive at the town of Pilcopata, where we will rest at our first lodge.
Day 2 : Pilcopata – Atalaya – Machuhuasi Lagoon – Night Walk
After enjoying a delicious breakfast to recharge, we will take an exploratory hike through the jungle to observe birds and various species of monkeys. We will then continue our journey overland for approximately one hour to the Port of Atalaya.
In Atalaya, we will board a motorized boat and navigate the river for about 30 minutes to reach our second lodge. During the trip, we can swim in the river and enjoy a revitalizing natural mud bath. After a regional lunch, the adventure of navigating on traditional wooden rafts across Machuhuasi Lagoon awaits us. In this wetland, we will observe white caimans, capybaras, tapirs, and a wide variety of waterbirds. As night falls, we will take a night walk to discover the fascinating wildlife that awakens after sunset, closing the day with a peaceful rest at the lodge.
Day 3 : Atalaya – Parrot Clay Lick – Ceiba Tree – Night Walk
This day we will begin navigating very early toward the Parrot Clay Lick, a mineral-rich clay wall where hundreds of colorful parrots and birds gather every morning to feed. It is an unforgettable natural spectacle full of harmony and color.
We will return to the lodge for breakfast and a brief rest before heading out on a hike through the deep trails of the Manu. Our objective will be the majestic Ceiba Tree, the giant of the Amazon, where we will look for signs of larger mammals such as tapirs and capybaras. To wrap up our last night in the jungle, we will take a specialized night walk focused on observing exotic insects, amphibians, and, if we’re lucky, snakes, giving us total immersion in the mysteries of the jungle.
Day 4 : Final Hike – Pilcopata – Cloud Forest – Cusco
On our last morning, we will explore a final trail to catch the last glimpses of Amazonian wildlife and its wonders. After breakfast, we will begin the return by boat to Puerto Atalaya, where our land transport will be waiting for the return journey.
During the ascent back into the Andes, we will have new opportunities to spot hummingbirds, orchids, and beautiful waterfalls before leaving the lush jungle behind. We will enjoy spectacular mountain views and arrive in the city of Cusco between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The final stop of this unforgettable journey will be Plazoleta Regocijo, near the Plaza de Armas.
