Over View – Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days + Sandoval Lake

This is a 3-day / 2-night adventure and nature program in the Tambopata National Reserve, near Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios). Day 1 is dedicated to arrival and acclimatization. After pickup in Puerto Maldonado, the river transfer to the lodge takes place. In the afternoon, an introductory trek allows you to learn about medicinal plants and spot monkeys and birds. The day culminates with a visit to the Canopy Tower and, optionally, a nighttime boat ride in search of caimans. Day 2 begins with the most anticipated event: the early morning visit to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, where the ritual of birds ingesting clay is observed. In the afternoon, kayaking on the river (weather permitting) offers views of capybaras and turtles. The evening includes a night walk to observe active wildlife (frogs, insects, etc.). Day 3 focuses on Lake Sandoval. A trek of approximately 3 km through primary forest leads to the mammal clay lick. The lake is navigated in search of aquatic wildlife (giant otters) and monkeys (howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys). After lunch on the shore, the return to Puerto Maldonado begins.

Itinerary – Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days + Sandoval Lake

📍 Day 1 : Welcome to the Tambopata Jungle

Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, we will welcome you at the airport or bus terminal and transfer you to our main office, where we will complete the registration process. For your comfort, we recommend repacking your luggage and bringing only the essentials to the lodge. We will then begin an approximately two-hour overland journey to the banks of the Tambopata River, where we will board a boat that will take us to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge.

Upon arriving at the lodge, you will be welcomed with an orientation talk and shown to your rooms, after which you will enjoy a typical regional lunch. During the afternoon, we will take an introductory hike through the tropical rainforest, allowing us to have a first contact with the local biodiversity in its natural habitat, observing various species of mammals, reptiles, and insects.

📍 Day 2 : Festival at the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

We will begin the day at 4:30 a.m. heading to the Chuncho Clay Lick, considered one of the largest in the world. During the approximately one-and-a-half-hour boat ride, we will have the opportunity to observe species such as capybaras and tapirs on the banks, and even, with some luck, spot the jaguar in its natural environment. After enjoying a picnic-style breakfast in front of the Amazonian landscape, we will position ourselves to observe hundreds of parrots of various species descending to the clay walls. Joining this natural spectacle are the red, green, and blue-and-yellow macaws, which come to the clay lick to supplement their diet and eliminate toxins, offering a truly unique wildlife viewing experience.

After the activity concludes, we will return to the lodge for lunch, after which we will begin the transfer to the Lake Sandoval area. After navigating the Madre de Dios River, we will arrive at Monte Amazónico Lodge to check into our rooms. In the evening, we will go out on a boat equipped with flashlights in search of white caimans and capybaras, which are often found on the sandy banks along the river. After concluding this outing, we will return to the lodge for dinner and a restful night’s sleep.

📍 Day 3 : Lake Sandoval – A Full Day!

After breakfast, we will begin a 3-kilometer hike through the dense tropical rainforest to Lake Sandoval, one of the most important and biodiverse ecosystems in the Tambopata National Reserve. Upon reaching its shores, we will board a rowboat to explore its waters, the habitat of numerous species. During the boat ride, we will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of birds and primates in their natural environment, including cormorants, jacanas, herons, as well as squirrel monkeys, black-capped capuchin monkeys, sloths, and howler monkeys.

With some luck, the tour will allow us to spot the family of giant river otters, an emblematic endangered species, as well as imposing black caimans that inhabit the area. After this immersive experience, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a typical regional lunch and take a brief rest.

Finally, we will begin the return journey to the city of Puerto Maldonado, where we will transfer you to the airport or bus station to successfully conclude our Amazon expedition.
