Over View – Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days + Macaw Clay Lick

The expedition begins with the transfer from Puerto Maldonado to an ecological lodge, where the first afternoon is dedicated to getting acquainted with the primary forest and discovering the medicinal flora alongside the first monkey families. This introduction sets the stage for the second day, which begins before dawn navigating to the Chuncho Clay Lick to witness the vibrant ritual of hundreds of macaws on the clay cliffs. Following this spectacle, the day continues with a silent kayak adventure on the river to spot riverbank wildlife, and a night walk that reveals the mysteries of the jungle after sunset. Finally, the third day focuses on the majestic Lake Sandoval, where a canoe ride offers the chance to observe exotic birds and river otters, culminating with lunch in front of the Amazonian landscape before the final return to the city.

Itinerary – Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days + Macaw Clay Lick

📍 Day 1 : Welcome to Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata Lodge

Upon your arrival in the city of Puerto Maldonado, we will receive you at the airport or bus terminal and transfer you to our Hacienda Tambopata office, where we will complete the corresponding registration. At this point, we recommend packing your bag with only the essentials for the lodge, leaving your larger luggage at our office for your convenience. We will then begin an approximately two-hour overland journey to the banks of the Tambopata River, where we will board a boat that will take us to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge.

Upon arriving at the lodge, you will receive a warm welcome and be shown to your rooms, after which you will enjoy a lunch prepared with local ingredients. In the afternoon, we will take an introductory hike through the tropical rainforest, giving us a first contact with the region’s biodiversity. During this outing, we will have the opportunity to observe various species in their natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and a wide variety of insects characteristic of this Amazonian ecosystem.

📍 Day 2 : Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

We will begin the day at 4:30 a.m. with a boat ride of approximately one and a half hours to the Chuncho Clay Lick, recognized as one of the largest in the world. During this river journey, we will have the opportunity to spot species such as capybaras and tapirs on the banks, and even the jaguar—the largest feline in the Americas—in its natural environment. Upon arrival at the clay lick, we will position ourselves strategically to observe the descent of hundreds of parrots of various species, followed by the impressive red, green, and blue-and-yellow macaws, which come to the clay walls to supplement their diet and eliminate toxins. This natural birdlife spectacle is one of the most memorable experiences the Amazon has to offer.

After the activity concludes, we will return to the lodge for breakfast and some rest. We will then take a guided walk through our botanical garden, where we will learn about various species of fruit trees, timber trees, and medicinal plants native to the region. After lunch, we will embark on a kayak journey along the Tambopata River; this silent glide through the water will give us a greater opportunity to observe wildlife along the riverbanks. By late afternoon, you will have free time to rest at the lodge or opt for an additional night walk before concluding the day.

📍 Day 3 : Return to Puerto Maldonado

After enjoying a full breakfast at the lodge, we will board our boat to begin the return journey to Puerto Maldonado. We will follow the same route we came in on, navigating the Tambopata River until connecting with the land transport that will take us back to the city. Once in Puerto Maldonado, our team will handle the final transfer to the airport or bus station, thus concluding our services and your Tambopata jungle expedition.
