Itinerary – Machu Picchu 2 Days + Huayna Picchu Tour

📍 Day 1 : Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

A tour representative will pick you up at your hotel (in the historic center of Cusco) according to the train schedule, in tourist transportation. During this first part of the trip, you will travel by road for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes until reaching the Ollantaytambo Station.

We recommend having your small backpack ready with clothing for the two days, your ID or passport, printed ticket, and water before departure, which is usually very early. You can sleep during the drive if you wish, as the road is safe and direct. You will arrive with plenty of time at the Ollantaytambo train station to use the restrooms or buy a hot coffee while waiting for the train. The train will depart according to your ticket schedule (subject to availability). During the ride (approximately 1 hr 45 min), the train will take you through impressive Sacred Valley landscapes: Andean mountains, Inca agricultural terraces, and the Urubamba River. Upon getting off the train in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), you will be greeted by our transfer who will be waiting at the station with a sign and calling you by name.

The transfer will give you a brief orientation of the area and take you to your Hostel where you can spend the night in Aguas Calientes. After getting settled, you will have the afternoon free as well as lunch on your own. Later in the evening, the Machu Picchu Guide will contact you to explain how you should take the bus the next day and how you will meet at the citadel entrance.

📍 Day 2 : Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Huayna Picchu – Return to Cusco

Get everything ready to begin the adventure, and before leaving the Hostel you can enjoy a continental breakfast provided by the Hostel. Head to the Consettur Bus station (the ride up takes approximately 30 min). When you arrive at the Machu Picchu entrance, the Guide will be waiting and calling you by name as indicated the day before.

We recommend having your Bus ticket, Passport, and most importantly your Machu Picchu Entrance Ticket ready. You will enter the archaeological park by showing your ticket and passport at the checkpoint. Your professional guide (accredited) will take you on a 1 to 1.5-hour tour through the most important points of the citadel (according to the type of Entrance Ticket). After the photos and guided tour, you will head to the next entrance for Huayna Picchu. You will enter Huayna Picchu by showing your second ticket and passport at the checkpoint (this will be the last point where the guide accompanies us, and we can say goodbye). This is where the real hiking experience begins (approximately 2 hours) climbing to the top of Huayna Picchu to rest at the summit. You will descend by the same path, keeping in mind the time needed for your return train and to walk around some areas of Aguas Calientes.

The Consettur Bus takes you back along the same route to the Aguas Calientes bus terminal. Once in town, you will have enough free time to walk around and have lunch on your own, keeping in mind the return time of your train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. You will return to the train station to board the return train to Ollantaytambo. Some trains have onboard entertainment (music, dance, or a fashion show with traditional costumes) and take about 5 minutes to depart. You will arrive at the Ollantaytambo train station after 1 hour and 45 minutes of travel, where tourist transportation will be waiting to return to the city of Cusco and will drop you off near the Plaza de Armas or at Plaza Regocijos.

Recommendations

I. Logistics and Access

  • Extreme Planning: It is crucial to purchase all tickets and, especially, the Huayna Picchu Ticket well in advance, as spots are very limited and sell out fast.
  • Mandatory Identification: You must carry your original passport or ID at all times. It is the only valid document for entry to sites and boarding trains.
  • Insurance: Purchase travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and accidents. You will be in remote areas and completing a challenging trek.

II. Equipment and Comfort

  • Small Backpack: Use a daypack, maximum 25 liters (6.6 gallons). Large luggage is not permitted inside Machu Picchu.
  • Layered Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing in layers. This is essential to adapt to the cold of the morning, midday humidity, and the intensity of the Huayna Picchu trek.
  • Hydration and Energy: Bring a reusable water bottle. Although a snack is included, we recommend extra light snacks for the mountain climb.
  • Cash: Bring cash (soles) for lunch on Day 2 and any personal purchases.

III. Safety and Regulations on the Mountain and Citadel

  • Punctuality: Punctuality is critical, especially for the Huayna Picchu ascent, as the entrance has very strict schedules that do not allow delays.
  • Self-Guided Ascent: Remember that the Huayna Picchu ascent is done without a guide. Follow the marked trail and assess your physical condition before starting the hike.
  • Prohibited Items: Do not bring drones, large tripods, or selfie sticks. Retracing your steps on the Machu Picchu circuit is prohibited, and eating inside the citadel is not allowed.
