Lima to Cusco: Flights, Buses & How to Travel (2026 Guide)

Posted On: 22 de October de 2026 | Tours & Day Trips

Almost every Machu Picchu trip starts in Lima, Peru’s coastal capital and main international gateway — and from there you need to get up to Cusco, high in the Andes. There are two realistic ways to do it, and for most travelers the choice is easy. Here’s how Lima to Cusco works.

Quick Answer

  • Fly: a ~1h20 domestic flight — by far the most common and sensible option.
  • Bus: a long ~21–22 hour scenic overland journey for those with time and a love of the road.
  • No direct train runs Lima–Cusco.
  • Altitude: you go from sea level (Lima) to ~3,400 m (Cusco) — plan to take it easy on arrival.

Option 1: Fly (Recommended)

The quick, obvious choice: a direct domestic flight from Lima to Cusco takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.

  • Frequency: many daily flights with Peru’s domestic carriers.
  • Book early for better fares, especially in high season (June–August) and around holidays.
  • Morning flights are more reliable — afternoon mountain weather can cause delays.
  • You arrive in Cusco in time to start your day, but go gently as you adjust to the altitude.

This is what we arrange for nearly all our guests.

Option 2: The Bus (Scenic but Long)

For budget travelers or those who love overland journeys, buses run Lima–Cusco in roughly 21–22 hours.

  • Comfort: premium “cama”/”bus-cama” services have reclining seats, meals and onboard service.
  • Route & scenery: the road climbs through dramatic Andean landscapes, but it’s a serious time commitment.
  • Altitude bonus: some travelers feel the overland climb is gentler on the body than flying straight to 3,400 m — though it’s much slower.

There’s no train between Lima and Cusco, so it’s flights or buses.

Arriving in Cusco: Handle the Altitude

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m, and you’ll feel the thin air on arrival — especially if you flew up from sea level.

  • Rest on your first afternoon; avoid alcohol and heavy meals.
  • Hydrate, and sip coca tea (offered everywhere).
  • Consider sleeping lower in the Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo/Urubamba, ~2,800 m) your first nights.
