Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain: The Easier Alternative to Vinicunca (2026)
Everyone knows Vinicunca — the famous striped ridge that fills Instagram. Far fewer people know Palccoyo, the “other” rainbow mountain a bit further from Cusco. And for a lot of travelers, Palccoyo is actually the smarter choice: same 5,000 m payoff, a fraction of the effort, and a fraction of the crowd.
Here’s what Palccoyo is, and how to decide between the two.
Quick Answer
- Palccoyo is the easy one. A gentle ~45-minute walk versus Vinicunca’s steep 1.5–2 hour climb.
- You get three colored ridges, not one — plus a “stone forest” of rock spires.
- Far fewer people. Palccoyo stays quiet while Vinicunca gets packed.
- The trade-off: Vinicunca’s single ridge is more dramatic and iconic; Palccoyo is gentler and more panoramic.
Choose Palccoyo if you’re worried about altitude or fitness, traveling with kids or older family, or you just want the colors without the crowd and the grind.
What Is Palccoyo?
Palccoyo is a rainbow-colored mountain area south-east of Cusco, in the same mineral-rich Andes that created Vinicunca. Instead of one big striped ridge, it offers three separate rainbow ridges in a single walk, wide-open valley views, and a dramatic field of eroded rock pinnacles known as the “stone forest.”
Because it’s so much gentler, it’s often marketed as “the alternative rainbow mountain” — but plenty of people who do both prefer Palccoyo.
Palccoyo vs Vinicunca
| Palccoyo | Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) | |
|---|---|---|
| Walk to viewpoint | ~45 min, gentle | 1.5–2 hours, steep |
| Trailhead altitude | ~4,900 m | ~4,650 m |
| Top altitude | ~5,000 m | ~5,036 m |
| Elevation gain | ~140 m (gradual) | ~400 m (steep) |
| Ridges | Three + stone forest | One dramatic ridge |
| Crowds | Low | High |
| Best for | Families, altitude-cautious, quiet | Fit hikers, the iconic photo |
The key number is elevation gain: Palccoyo climbs only about 140 m on a gentle grade, while Vinicunca gains roughly 400 m up a steep trail — at nearly 5,000 m, that difference is enormous.

The Catch: It Starts High
Don’t mistake “easy walk” for “no altitude.” Palccoyo’s trailhead is actually higher than Vinicunca’s — around 4,900 m — you just don’t climb much from there. So while the walking is gentle, you’re still standing at 5,000 m, and altitude affects everyone.
The rule is the same as for any high hike near Cusco: acclimatize first. Spend two to three days in Cusco and the lower Sacred Valley before going. Our altitude sickness in Cusco guide and the Humantay altitude tips both apply directly here.
What the Day Looks Like
Palccoyo is further from Cusco than Vinicunca, so expect an early start and a longer drive — but a much shorter, easier walk once you arrive. A typical full-day tour:
- Early pickup from Cusco and a scenic drive through the southern Andes
- Breakfast stop en route
- Trailhead at ~4,900 m; gentle walk (~45 min) to the ridges and stone forest
- Time for photos across the three viewpoints
- Lunch and return to Cusco by evening
Bring layers, sun protection, water, and small cash for entrance and restrooms — the same kit as any Cusco day hike.
Which Should You Book?
Book Palccoyo if: you’re cautious about altitude, not a confident hiker, traveling with family, or you’d trade the single iconic ridge for three quieter ones and open space.
Book Vinicunca if: you’re reasonably fit, well acclimatized, and the famous striped-ridge photo is the whole point — just accept the steep climb, the early start, and the crowds.
Do both? Only if you have the days and you’re well acclimatized. They’re similar palettes, so most people pick one.
